Hosting two FIFA World Cups in under four years, and top-notch performances by National Teams in International competitions have defined Indian Football in the last 5 years. Speaking on the sidelines of FICCI’s GOAL Summit 2019, AIFF’s Senior Vice President, Mr Subrata Datta said: “Indian Football his growing exponentially. It has grown by leaps and bounds. The holistic development of Indian football over the last few years has been a major achievement, and all associated with it should be proud.” “Indian football is being talked about in the nook and corner of the world, be it in terms of our National Teams, or the FIFA World Cups that we have hosted, and will host,” he added. India hosted the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017 in 2017 and is slated to the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in 2020. The performances of the Indian National Teams have been noteworthy as well, especially the senior team’s 4-1 win against Thailand in the AFC Asian Cup, the women’s te

Anas Edathodika has retired from the Indian national team

The 31-year-old  Indian   defender took to social media to announce his decision. It comes with a very heavy heart today to announce my retirement from Indian national football team. It’s been a very hard decision to take and accept. I love to play more years at my best, but I think it’s the time to step down and give opportunities to youngsters who can perform better. It took 11 years to break into the national team and playing for the national team is the top achievement in my career; although the journey was short. Each and every time I tried to give more than 100 percent for the team. I was so disappointed to pick up an injury in the opening minutes and it will hurt me forever. I just want to say a huge thanks to the coach @stephenconstantine for believing in me and giving me the opportunity and I wish you good luck for the future. Also thanks to all the coaching staffs, teammates, the fans and who all have supported me throughout my journey for the national team

We should have done better with the finishing: Sunil Chhetri

India captain Sunil Chhetri was left to rue poor finishing in Thursday night’s 2-0 Asian Cup defeat to hosts UAE, but says his side will “fight until the last second” for a place in the knockout stages. India were right to feel aggrieved by the loss at Zayed Sports City Stadium when, despite creating a number of early chances, they fell behind to Khalfan Mubarak’s strike three minutes before half time. India then struck the woodwork twice in the second half, with UAE striker Ali Mabkhout scoring in the last minute to make secure the three points. However, Stephen Constantine's team still sit second in Group A thanks to their opening 4-1 victory against Thailand. The standings mean, should they defeat Bahrain on Monday, they will be guaranteed progression to the last 16. Asked following the reverse if India deserved to lose to the UAE, Chhetri said: “It’s easy for me to say no, but we didn’t convert chances and they did. So we can’t say they didn’t deserve t

We need to win against Bahrain: Head Coach Stephen Constantine

Image
The morning after the Blue Tigers went down to hosts United Arab Emirates in their second Group league match of the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019, Head Coach Stephen Constantine expressed that the team now “needs to get ready for the next game” against Bahrain. “We have to pick ourselves up and get ready for the next game. We need to aim for a win and get something from that game. Hopefully, we can get the result to qualify,” Constantine stated. India next plays Bahrain on January 14 and a victory will ensure the Blue Tigers a spot in the Round of 16. Talismanic striker Sunil Chhetri also echoed Constantine’s words. “We are still in the running. We are ready to face Bahrain. As a team, we are united. We are ready to fight. That's our game plan against Bahrain,” Chhetri maintained. Against UAE, the Indians muffed some gifted opportunities, hit the bar twice and eventually went down 0-2. Referring back to the match, Constantine explained: “

AFC Asian Cup 2019: Chanathip puts Thailand 1-0 up against Bahrain

Chanathip Songkrasin emerged as the hero for Thailand on Thursday as he kept them alive at AFC Asian Cup 2019 with a 58th-minute winner that handed his side a 1-0 Group B triumph over Bahrain. Having been humbled by India in their opening game of the tournament as they fell to a shock 4-1 defeat, the Thais entered the game at the Al-Maktoum Stadium knowing they needed a win if they were to have a proper chance of reaching the Round of 16. It did however initially look as though another disappointing result was on the cards as they put in a lacklustre display in the opening 45. Instead, it was Bahrain who created the better of the chances and Thailand goalkeeper Siwarak Tedsungnoen had to be alert to make a smart save from Kamil Al-Aswad’s low shot a minute before the half-hour mark, before Mohamed Al-Romaihi wastefully headed over from two yards out after being left unmarked at the far post four minutes before halftime. “India are a very compact team and we know they will look to play on the counter-attack" UAE coach Alberto Zaccheroni

head of their ‘Make or Break’ game against India at the Asian Cup 2019, the UAE coach, Alberto Zaccheroni, is keen to take on his confident opponents. Zaccheroni, UAE’s head coach is not the one to shy away from a challenge. UAE are scheduled to face India today and the hosts are indeed prepared for a good fight at the Zayed Sports City Stadium. Addressing the concerns about their clash with the Indian side, Zaccheroni highlighted the strengths of the Indian team and went on to discuss how he wishes to counter their attacks. Both UAE and India have had interesting matches to kick of their Asian Cup campaign. While India beat Thailand 4-1 in their opening match, UAE settled for a draw after facing Bahrain. “Eight years ago, there were maybe eight Asian teams ranked in the top 100. Now we have 17 teams. The opening round of the AFC Asian Cup has also showed us that there were no easy games.” The two teams will look to win today as a victory for India will assu

“We have our plans for the UAE" Indian defender Pritam Kotal

After a comprehensive 4-1 victory against Thailand in the first league match, Indian defender Pritam Kotal feels that India are well-prepared to take on hosts UAE in their next match on Thursday (January 10), at the Sheikh Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi. Kotal, who played a stellar role as right wing back for India keeping Thailand’s Chanathip Songskrasin quiet in the previous game, said that the team has made specific plans for the hosts. “We have our plans for the UAE game. You will be able to see them while we implement it on the pitch,” said the defender. “They are a very good side. We have a lot of respect for them. But we are ready to give it a real fight.” When asked whether Blue Tigers view UAE as their toughest opponents in the group stage, Kotal expressed “every match is a difficult one.” “You can’t really say which match is tough. Before the Thailand game, would anybody have said that it was going to be easy? Every match is tough. W
