Robert Lewandowski was crowned the winner of FIFA The Best 2021 award

Robert Lewandowski was crowned the winner of FIFA The Best 2021 award in the men's category, beating Lionel Messi and Mohamed Salah. Lewandowski received more than twice the number of votes that Messi did.

After seeing himself being 'robbed' of the Ballon d'Or 2021, Robert Lewandowski defeated Lionel Messi and Mohamed Salah to be crowned FIFA The Best men's player 2021 at the award ceremony on Monday night. It was the second time that Lewandowski won the award, going level with Cristiano Ronaldo who also has two such honours to his name.

Lewandowski has arguably been the best player in the world for the past couple of years. Last season in the Bundesliga, he broke the legendary Gerd Mueller's record by scoring 41 goals in a single campaign. As for the entire 2021 year, Lewandowski had scored a whopping 69 goals for club and country.

The Bayern Munich forward topped the podium with the most number of votes while Paris Saint-Germain forward Messi finished second, ahead of Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah. As for the women's category, Barcelona superstar Alexia Putellas had emerged triumphant. Putellas had also won the Ballon d'Or 2021 earlier.

The margin of victory for Lewandowski was significantly higher than that of Messi. The Polish forward had earned a whopping 82 first-place votes while Messi, who finished second, only got 39, which is less than half of the Bayern striker. It is only in terms of fans' votes that Lewandowski was beaten By Messi. In all other categories, the Bayern star was top.

The best manager of the year was also announced at the award ceremony, with Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel beating Italy's Roberto Mancini and Manchester City's Pep Guardiola to be crowned the Manager of the Year 2021, having won the UEFA Champions League in 2021 with the Blues.

Chelsea and Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy won the Goalkeeper of the Year 2021 award, beating Italy and PSG star Gianluigi Donnarumma as well as Bayern Munich and Germany No. 1 Manuel Neuer.
